Notes: Ghislaine Cournoyer was born in Boucherville. She is a retired nurse who taught at the Cégep de Sorel-Tracy until 1996. She also served for five years on a regional health council and for four years as a member of the Quebec public health ethics committee. She has been a member of the Red Cross board of directors (Sorel-Tracy section) and a secretary of the Association québécoise des retraités du secteur public et parapublic.[2] In 2002, she served as health minister in a three-day provincial "parlement des sages."[3] Cournoyer worked for the Liberal Party in the 2004 and 2006 elections before running for office herself.[4] She finished third against Bloc Québécois incumbent Louis Plamondon.

Notes: Betsy McGregor was born and raised in Peterborough. She holds a doctorate in veterinary medicine and has taught at the University of Guelph and Trent University.[5] She has worked at the United Nations at different stages in her career, and in the 1990s she took part in a Canadian delegation to UNESCO for negotiations that led to the Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights.[6] She has also worked for Agriculture Canada, Industry Canada, and the Canadian International Development Agency.

When profiled by the Toronto Star in 2001, McGregor was coordinating a global think tank on bio-medical ethics at the Harvard Medical School.[7] She later became a senior associate researcher and guest lecturer at Trent University.[8] McGregor has also climbed Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere.[9]

The 2008 election was her first bid for public office.[10] On election day, she finished second against Conservative incumbent Dean Del Mastro.

McGregor later took part in a local campaign to raise awareness and funds for the vocational training of women in Afghanistan and played a prominent role in a march protesting the death sentence imposed on Iranian woman Sakineh Ashtiani for alleged adultery.[11] She has been nominated as the Liberal Party candidate for Peterborough in the 2011 federal election.[12]
